Where it came from

Lexitaire's tile-stacking idea goes back to a desktop game called Wordly, itself inspired by Carl Haynes' "Wordsmith" for TiVo Series 3 — read the full story. Wordly's own iPhone edition, written in Objective-C, has since been fully rewritten from scratch as Lexitaire's native iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV apps, built with Swift and SwiftUI. The version you're playing right here in your browser is a separate, independent port to plain HTML5 and JavaScript — its own from-scratch codebase, not a wrapper around the native apps — but the board is still the same idea: letter tiles, played one column at a time.
